SCMC History

The Space Coast Mustang Club had its humble beginnings on August 27, 1981. First named “Florida East Coast Mustang Club,” with a group of twenty-five Mustang-loving car members. Club membership has grown to over 100 members and is open to all persons 16 years old or older who are interested in Mustang automobiles.

Almost immediately after the Club was formed, members began participating in car shows as a Club. Club social events began shortly thereafter. On November 22nd, 1981, a picnic was held for members and their entire families. This tradition has continued from 1981 to the present time.

The Club’s first membership roster was published in 1982. Of this early list, Don Stehle, Dan Akimoto, Jerry and Jean Boles, Don Brown, Sandy Henry, Bob Mungall, Mike Perez, Coy Revis, and Len Wardman are credited with the early formation of the Club. The first Club By-Laws were developed in 1986 and the name of the Club was officially changed to the “Space Coast Mustang Club” to more accurately reflect our Space Coast heritage. Almost from the beginning, the Club held discussions on a national affiliation with the Mustang Club of America. Finally, in 1991, the Space Coast Mustang Club took a big step and was approved as a Regional Group of the Mustang Club of America. The Club continues to maintain its membership with the MCA.

Each year the Club holds a variety of events … something for everybody! We have an annual car show, cruise-ins, dinners, parades, picnics, etc. One event of significance is the Club’s participation in the Merritt Island High School homecoming activities by driving the queen and her court during their homecoming parade in Mustang convertibles … their mascot is the Mustang horse! Other high school homecomings the Club escorted included Bayside and Heritage High Schools.

Throughout the years, the Club has helped the local community by providing support to local charities. Historically, the Club has donated toys to “Toys for Tots”, assisted with D.A.R.E. in the public schools, helped the Brevard Zoo get started. Other areas the Club has donated funds to include The Children’s Hunger Project and Wheelchairs 4 Kids. We continue to support Brevard County charities by donating funds raised at events and by donating our time to other fund raising events such as the Veterans Cemetery Restorations, Inc. Benefit and Car Show which was co-sponsored by the SCMC and Space Coast Harley Davidson.

In 1999, the Club hosted the biggest car show to date – the Big Time of Mustang car shows! We hosted our first MCA National Show, the “Spaceport Blastoff” 1999, held at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

In 2023, the Club once again hosted the largest MCA show to date (capped at 400 registered cars by MCA) called “Fun In The Sun”. It was held at the amazing American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne and is the private collection of Mr. Mark Pieloch with over 420 cars at an estimated $60 Million value at that time.

General membership meetings have been held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Details will also be posted on this website under events and published in the SCMC Pony News. The SCMC Pony News is the official newsletter of the Space Coast Mustang Club which highlights current events as well as the Club activities coming up for Club participation.
